ASHAs are community health workers instituted by the Government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) as part of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). The Mission began in 2005.Now there is "an ASHA in every village or after population of 1000" in India.there are over 8 lac ashas in India now.
ASHAs are local women trained to act as health educators and health promoters in their localities.They motivate women for normal and hospitalized delivery, improve immunization among children and pregnant women, provide health education, encourage family planning , treat basic illness with first aid, keep demographic records, and improve village sanitation. They have decreased the maternal and child mortality rate in India.
